Natural Language Processing is the foundation behind almost all everyday AI language functions. When writing with a chatbot, summarising a document with AI, or using the spam filter in an email system, NLP is at work. NLP combines linguistics and machine learning to teach computers how to handle language. Classic NLP tasks include text classification, sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, machine translation, and text summarisation. With the rise of large language models, these tasks are no longer separate specialised models but are handled by a single model. NLP differs from simple text search because it processes meaning, context, and nuance — not just keywords. For understanding how AI works with language, NLP is the foundational field.
