What is the Team Canvas?

The Team Canvas is a visualisation tool for new or existing teams that brings goals, values, strengths, and roles together on one sheet so all members develop a shared understanding of how they work together.

DEFINITION

The Team Canvas was developed by Alexey Ivanov and co-founders of Crisp and published in 2015. It is structurally inspired by the Business Model Canvas and transfers canvas logic to the team level. The Team Canvas helps teams in kickoffs, realignments, and critical phases make essential foundations explicit: shared goals, personal goals, roles, strengths and capabilities, values, rules and activities, and a jointly held purpose question. A Team Canvas workshop typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes. It suits new teams starting together, existing teams in change, and teams under tension caused by unclear roles or expectations. The Basic version focuses on a few core fields. The Extended version adds areas such as values, rules, and purpose.

CONNECTIONS

Leadership

Leaders use the Team Canvas to structure team conversations that are otherwise hard to facilitate: What do we want to achieve together? What are our values? What does each person expect from the others?

Project Management

In project kickoffs, the Team Canvas replaces long texts with role and responsibility definitions. It creates shared understanding faster than written documents and makes expectations explicit.

Artificial Intelligence

AI teams often consist of members with very different backgrounds: data scientists, developers, UX designers, business analysts. The Team Canvas creates a shared foundation despite different professional cultures.

KEY POINTS

  • Alexey Ivanov developed the Team Canvas in 2015 as a structured kickoff tool.
  • It is inspired by the canvas logic of the Business Model Canvas.
  • Fields: shared and personal goals, roles, strengths, values, rules, purpose.
  • Suitable for new teams, existing teams in change, and teams with role conflicts.
  • Duration of a Team Canvas workshop: 60 to 90 minutes.

EXAMPLE

A newly assembled agile product team meets for a kickoff. Instead of sharing org charts, they work for 90 minutes with the Team Canvas. Each member names personal goals and strengths. The team jointly defines what good work means for them. One value emerges immediately: “We address conflicts directly, not via Slack.” Three weeks later the team is noticeably more aligned than comparable teams without a kickoff.

MISCONCEPTIONS

Is the Team Canvas the same as a team charter?

Similar, but not identical. A team charter is often a longer text document with formal sections. The Team Canvas is a visual, interactive workshop format that creates a shared picture in a short time.

Is the Team Canvas worthwhile for existing teams too?

Yes, especially in phases of change. When team composition changes, new goals emerge, or tensions increase, a renewed Team Canvas workshop is often more valuable than for new teams.
